Born in a cab on August 15, 1981, Oluwatosin Bucknor popularly known as Tosyn Bucknor was a Nigerian radio host, social media content creator, television anchor, event host and writer.

Tosyn Bucknor was born to Mr. Segun Bucknor – a journalist and musician known for his Soul music in the 70s – and Mrs. Olusola Bucknor. She had her elementary education at Fountain Nursery and Primary School, Surulere before she proceeded to Queen’s College, Yaba. Tosyn thereafter studied Law at the University of Lagos, Akoka and the Nigerian Law School, Lagos.

She served as a member of the National Youth Service Corps opting to teach students Literature-in-English and English at Archdeacon Crowther Memorial Girls’ School, Elelenwo in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Tosyn got married to her French boyfriend, Aurelien Boyer on November 15, 2015. They had the traditional wedding at Landmark Events Centre, Oniru, Lagos and the white wedding in France.

Tosyn Bucknor and Radio

Tosyn had a relationship that lasted for almost one decade with Radio until death decided to do them apart. She started her adventure on Radio with comedian Tee-A on Eko 89.7 FM before she interned at Cool 96.9 FM. While interning at Cool FM, Tosyn Bucknor hosted the Fun Hour Show on Saturdays.

She eventually moved to Top Radio 90.9 FM in 2009 where she became the host of a morning show. Tosyn was famed for being the only female radio host handling the morning belt all by herself at the time. She worked with Top Radio for seven years before joining Inspiration FM in February 2018.

In her almost one decade journey as an On Air Personality, Tosyn stood out amongst her peers and colleagues for her effortless professionalism and the rare kind of vibe she brings on her Radio shows.

She was nicknamed ‘The Voice of Lagos’, the ‘Areaaaa Boss’, ‘Area Maama’, among other monikers. Tosyn also had a stint with television. She appeared in a handful of movies and television shows. However her voice was all you need to get any audience excited.

Tosyn Bucknor – The Singer

Born to a musician father who rocked the 70s with classical soul music, it wasn’t surprising to see Tosyn come off as an amazing singer and she has an album to show for that.

Tosyn wrote, sang and recorded music with the stage name CON.tra.diction. She has an album titled ‘Pop Rock Soul and Jara’ which was a blend of various sounds, to her name.

As a recording artiste, singer and songwriter, Tosyn worked with several prominent artistes including Skales and Eva. She also worked with Producers like Sess, Tintin, Cobhams Asuquo, Coldflames, DJ Klem, Knighthouse among others.

In a bid to create a platform for up and coming music artistes, Tosyn Bucknor founded ONE MIC NAIJA with two partners. The initiative is a concert dedicated to bringing new and established artistes together on the same stage while giving the latter the chance to showcase their talents.

Tosyn Bucknor – The Event Host

All thanks to her eclectic vibe, Tosyn was also a successful event host. She hosted some of the most popular music, comedy and corporate events in Lagos and beyond. From ‘Ekaabo’ to ‘A Night Out with Etcetera’ to ‘Laffmataz Hosts Ali Baba’ to ‘From Lagos with Love’ to ‘The Workerman Movement Album Release Party’ to ‘Mo’Cheedah Album Listening Party’ to ‘Aramide Suitcase Album Listening Party’.

She was also the host of ‘Facing the Giants Seminar’, ‘Rise Seminar’, ‘Exquisite Magazine’s Party Against Cancer 2011’, ‘Cancer Awareness Show 2012’ among others.

Tosyn Bucknor – Advocacy

If there’s anything that seems so dear to Tosyn after Radio throughout her lifetime, then it has to Advocacy.

In the spirit of giving hope to people who suffers from the Sickle Cell disease, she founded a sickle cells project called ‘These Genes’. The project was dedicated to advocating for people with the disease.

She herself was affected by the Sickle Cell Disease. Notwithstanding, she beat the odds and was an amazing bundle of energy. So much that hardly could you link a deadly disease like sickle cell to her.

Tosyn Bucknor was also a volunteer for Support an Orphan Project, SAMi and Child Adoption and Sponsorship Awareness Project (CASAP). She also supported several election awareness campaigns like ‘Enough is Enough’, ‘1 Thumb Nigeria’ among others.

 

The Death of Tosyn Bucknor

On Monday, November 19th of 2018, Tosyn Bucknor passed away at the age of 37. The news of her death filtered in on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 when her sister, Funke Bucknor of Zapphire Events announced it on social media.

According to her, Tosyn died of complications from Sickle Cell Anaemia. Her death came as a rude shock to many. With her enigmatic personality, Tosyn despite being born with the Sickle Cell disease, had always pride herself as living life to the fullest. She brought joy, happiness and light to the world with everything that she represents while alive. And living this world, she left an indelible mark in the sands of time.
